YouTube Shorts is extending its video length to three minutes, starting on October 15. This update allows creators to upload videos longer than the current 60-second limit. The new time limit applies to videos that are square or taller in aspect ratio and the minimum video length remains at 15 seconds.

Additional features

In addition to the extended time, YouTube is introducing other new features. Creators will have access to remixing templates. They can use these templates to sync their clips with trending video sounds.

YouTube first introduced its remix feature earlier in 2024, which lets creators strip audio, use videos as backgrounds, and create side-by-side clips. Now, creators can use these tools to make remix clips directly within the Shorts camera.

For those who prefer fewer Shorts, YouTube will add an option to skip them. The tool is accessible in the three-dot menu. However, this preference is temporary.

Also, YouTube said creators will use Google’s AI model, Veo, to create content. The platform recently announced plans to use Veo to create six-second Shorts using text prompts. Now, the AI tool will assist in generating new backgrounds and video clips that can be added to Shorts.

Soon, creators will also be able to preview comments directly within the Shorts “even before you jump into the comments feed,” YouTube wrote.
