Meta’s Threads has now reached 320 million monthly active users (MAUs). CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, announced this during the company’s Q4 earnings presentation on Wednesday.

This marks a steady increase from the 300 million MAUs reported last month and a significant jump from 275 million in November 2024.

According to Zuckerberg, Threads is adding more than 1 million new users daily. He also reaffirmed his long-term vision for the platform, stating, “I expect Threads to continue on its trajectory to become the leading discussion platform and eventually reach 1 billion people over the next several years.”

Threads’ growth amidst competition

The numbers indicate consistent growth, but Threads still faces competition from X and and decentralized platform Bluesky. Despite Threads’ larger user base, Bluesky’s rapid rise suggests a growing interest in alternative platforms, especially among users seeking decentralized social media experiences.

Bluesky saw a surge in users following the U.S. elections in November, adding 20 million new users and outperforming Threads and X in publisher engagement. Yesterday, Bluesky reported reaching 30 million users, though its growth appeared to slow down in December, increasing by less than 10% month-over-month after an earlier 189% surge in November.

Despite this, Bluesky lags behind Threads in its overall user base. Meanwhile, X has been working on its engagement strategies including the launch of a dedicated video tab for U.S. users. X is also working on making its platform an “Everything” app. It recently partnered with Visa to power its digital payments platform ‘X Money.'

Meta’s updates and plans for Threads

Meta has been making frequent updates to attract more users to Threads. Some of the latest features include post-scheduling, allowing users to plan their content. The company also added a ‘view counts’ feature that shows how many times a post has been seen.

Meta’s Chief Financial Officer, Susan Li, has also said Threads is working on custom feeds, allowing users to create personalized content streams based on their interests.

Meta is also reportedly testing ads on Threads in the U.S. and Japan. This means the company may be preparing to monetize the platform in the future.
