Meta has rolled out its latest AI-powered tool, ‘Movie Gen,’ which can create 16-second videos from simple text prompts. 

How does Movie Gen work?

Movie Gen uses generative AI technology to analyze text prompts and generate videos. The videos can be produced in various aspect ratios to fit different platforms.

Movie Gen can also generate audio, edit existing videos, and transform photos into personalized clips featuring real people. Currently, access to Movie Gen is limited to select internal employees and a few external partners, including filmmakers.

According to Connor Hayes, a Meta Vice President focused on generative AI products, the company is working on integrating Movie Gen into existing apps by next year. He mentioned that the goal is to make video creation more engaging and accessible for everyone. “It will be fun to use, helpful for creators, good for overall engagement in the apps, but we don’t have a concrete product plan of what it will look like at this point,” he explained.

 Meta relies on large data to train tools that automatically create new content. It has already introduced its chatbot called Meta AI. 

Competition in the video generation space

Meta is not the only company developing video generation tools. Companies like Google and OpenAI are racing to advance this technology. OpenAI has introduced its video generator, Sora, which can create videos up to a minute long but isn't available to the public yet. 

Google’s video generation tool, Veo, was also launched earlier this year. Next year, the company plans to use Veo to generate six-second videos from text prompts for YouTube Shorts.
