Google tests ‘AI Mode’ to bring conversational AI into Search
The feature appears as a search filter alongside existing options

Google is reportedly testing a new search feature called "AI Mode." AI Mode integrates conversational AI into Search, per 9to5Google. The feature, powered by Google’s Gemini 2.0 AI model, provides AI-generated responses alongside traditional search results.
According to the report, AI Mode appears as a new search filter alongside existing options like Images, News, and Shopping. A screenshot from Google’s internal email shows that the feature displays web links in a card format on the right side of the screen.
When selected, it presents AI-generated summaries instead of a simple list of links. Users can also ask follow-up questions in a chatbot-like interface, refining their queries without starting a new search.
9to5Google says Google describes AI Mode as “Search intelligently research[ing] for you – organizing information into easy-to-digest breakdowns with links to explore content across the web.”

Google’s shift toward conversational search
Unlike traditional search, which focuses on fact-based queries, AI Mode is designed for more exploratory and open-ended questions. The AI-generated responses aim to provide context while still linking to relevant sources. This approach aligns with Google’s broader push toward AI-enhanced search experiences. The platform has already released AI Overviews to over 100 countries.
Current testing and public release
AI Mode is being tested internally with Google employees in the U.S. There is no confirmed release date, but 9to5Google suggests it may be available to the public later this year.
Google has not officially commented on AI Mode, but the test indicates the company’s continued efforts to integrate generative AI into its search ecosystem.
