Google said it processes more than 5 trillion searches every year. That’s roughly 417 billion searches per month and 14 billion per day, a major jump from the last reported figure of 2 trillion in 2016.
This is the first time in nearly a decade that Google has dropped this data. According to Google, the new figure comes from Google Internal Data (Jan 2025).
This data was shared by Vidhya Srinivasan, VP/GM of Google Ads and Commerce. Srinivasan discussed the company’s ad strategy. Srinivasan pointed to a range of AI-powered innovations as key drivers of this growth, saying, “Rich and multimodal experiences like AI Overviews, Circle to Search, and Lens give people new ways to express exactly what they want, more naturally than ever before.”
AI-Powered search is changing the user search experience
The data highlights how search behavior has evolved. Google has been improving how people search by integrating AI into its core search experience.
For example, Circle to Search, launched last year, enables users to highlight images, text, or video frames on their phones and get relevant search results without switching apps. Google Lens also continues to expand its capabilities. It now lets users search using video commands.
And then there’s AI Overviews AI which Google has integrated into Search to provide direct, AI-generated summaries of complex topics. This update is now accessible to over 100 countries.
These features are shifting how users interact with Search. Google says users are moving beyond simple keyword-based queries to multimodal searches. The company is testing ‘AI Mode’ to bring conversational AI into Search.
How Google’s Search volume breaks down
Google handles a massive number of searches every day. To put this into perspective, about 158,548 searches are happening every second. Stretched over a minute, it adds up to around 9.5 million searches. In just one hour, Google processes approximately 571 million searches. And for an entire day, the number stands at 14 billion searches.
These numbers, reported by Search Engine Land, show how dominant Google Search remains. To put this into perspective, back in 2012, Google handled roughly 1.2 trillion searches per year. That means in just over a decade, search volume has more than quadrupled.
