After months of testing ads in AI Overviews, Google has officially launched this feature for mobile users in the U.S. This new tool allows users to see product ads integrated into the AI-generated summaries of search results.

With this new format, users conducting searches will notice ads displayed with relevant content in the AI Overview section. This section offers AI-generated summaries of information related to users' queries. Along with these ads, users will still see helpful content like articles, solutions, and links to relevant web pages.

Advertisers using Google’s Shopping, Performance Max, or AI-powered search campaigns can place and display ads in AI Overviews. However, the ads will appear under a “Sponsored” label.

Since its launch, Google AI Overviews has faced criticism for providing misleading information. A report from SE Ranking shows that it often cites unreliable sources.

The company has recognized these challenges as it plans to remain competitive with other AI search engines, including ChatGPT, Perplexity AI, and the recently launched Microsoft Bing generative search tool for U.S. users.
