Google is expanding access to AI Mode beyond Google One AI Premium subscribers. Robby Stein, VP of Product at Google, confirmed the expansion in a post on X, stating that the company is "taking people off the Labs waitlist."
AI Mode, launched early this month, was to open to only premium subscribers of Google One’s AI plan. Now, more users can try out the feature.
At launch, Google said AI Mode will be an enhanced version of AI Overviews, which delivers AI-generated summaries at the top of search results. The company claimed the tool is designed to provide more advanced reasoning, multimodal capabilities, and improved responses to complex queries.
Users previously signed up for the AI Mode waitlist in Labs can now have access to the feature. Eligible users can try AI Mode directly from Google Search. On desktop or mobile, users can go to google.com and enter a search query. Then, tap the “AI Mode” tab below the search bar. Alternatively, they can go straight to AI Mode at google.com/aimode. In the Google app, users can look for the AI Mode icon beneath the search bar on the home screen.
Google says new features are on the way
According to Stein, Google is actively working on adding more features to AI Mode. Some of the upcoming updates include more visual responses. Stein also said Google will provide richer formatting for AI Mode. Search results might appear in a more structured format. Google will also provide new ways to access web content.
Ads could also be part of the new features coming to AI Mode. Reports already say Google plans to introduce ads into the search function. This ad experience in AI Mode will resemble how ads currently appear in AI Overviews.
