Glance has announced the launch of an AI-powered shopping experience that allows users to see outfit recommendations on a personalized avatar. The feature, built in partnership with Google Cloud, uses generative AI models, including Gemini and Imagen, to create personalized shopping experiences directly on smartphone lock screens.
This new feature enables users to upload a selfie, which is analyzed to generate an AI model resembling them. The AI then suggests outfits tailored to the user’s preferences, allowing them to visualize different looks before making a purchase.
Google Cloud partnership will power Glance AI-driven shopping
Glance AI-driven shopping will power Google Cloud’s AI capabilities. The platform will use Google’s Vertex AI to deploy the experience. “Glance will leverage Google Cloud’s Gemini intelligence capabilities and Imagen’s state-of-the-art image generation capabilities via Vertex AI to power Glance’s next-gen experiences,” the company stated.
The partnership allows Glance to develop consumer-facing AI applications to enhance smartphone lock screen experiences. According to Glance, it is already testing this feature in the U.S. through its Glance AI app.Â
How the AI-powered shopping feature will work
The AI-powered commerce feature will enable users to create an avatar by uploading a selfie or selecting an image from their gallery. Users can then specify details such as gender, hair length, ethnicity, and body type and generate an AI-powered model that tries on different outfits.
Once generated, users can browse AI-suggested looks, which appear on their lock screen. If a user likes a look, they can tap to see similar apparel available for purchase from e-commerce partners.
Glance’s CEO, Naveen Tewari, compared the experience to flipping through a fashion magazine where the user is the model. “Think of this experience as looking through a fashion magazine with the latest apparel, where you are the model on each page,” he said.
Monetization and expansion plans
Glance provides outfit suggestions from its network of over 400 e-commerce partners, earning a commission when users complete a purchase through affiliate links. The company has already piloted the feature in the U.S. with nearly 100,000 users, partnering with U.S. retailers and telecom service providers.
The company plans to expand this AI-powered shopping experience to India and roll out additional features, including the ability to upvote or downvote suggestions and use AI chat to refine fashion choices.
Glance’s growing AI ecosystem
Since its launch in 2019, Glance has gained over 300 million active users across India, Indonesia, Japan, and the U.S. The company delivers AI-powered lock screen experiences to more than 450 million Android smartphones worldwide.
With AI-driven personalization becoming a key trend, Glance aims to capitalize on its lock screen technology to integrate commerce and advertising into everyday user experiences. “Our combined knowledge, AI capabilities, and expertise uniquely position Glance to deliver the next level of AI-driven experiences for smartphone users, supported by viable business models such as commerce and advertising,” Tewari said.
