Facebook tests a new ‘Local Tab’ feature that brings content in one place for U.S. users
Local tab feature
Facebook has announced the rollout of new updates to its users. The platform is testing a new feature called the ‘Local Tab.' This tab will bring together content from Marketplace, Groups, and Events all in one spot. Facebook says this new feature will make it easier for users to find what’s happening locally.
Currently, Facebook is testing the tool in U.S. cities like Austin, New York City, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Chicago, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, San Francisco, and Phoenix.
In addition to the Local tab, Facebook will introduce a new swipeable section in users' feeds that highlights local community content. This will show local events, groups, notable people and businesses, items for sale, and more. Facebook claims that the addition of this update will allow users to stay connected with what's happening around them.
Facebook will also include weekly event recommendations tailored to each user. Users will receive notifications about upcoming events in their area.
The Explore tab feature
The platform is introducing a personalized Explore tab that will provide content based on user interests. Facebook says that it will use a “wide variety of signals to power our algorithm” to personalize content for users. Instagram has a similar feature that recommends photos, videos, and other content based on users' interests.
Single video tab for Reels
In the coming weeks, Facebook will also launch a new full-screen Video tab that looks like TikTok’s 'For You' page. It says the update will feature Reels and allow users to watch short-form, long-form, and live videos in one place.
The invite feature
Users can also invite their Instagram followers to events created on Facebook, with options to send invites via SMS or email. Facebook is also testing a new AI feature called ‘Group AI’ that will enable users to find answers to their questions, including those that have been asked before.
Messenger Communities
Facebook is rolling out ‘Messenger Communities.’ The tool is designed for small and medium-sized groups to connect around shared interests. According to Facebook, this new update will allow users to create topic-based chats without needing a Facebook Group. Users can invite friends directly or share a QR code with friends.
