Threads’ growing user base

Threads has achieved a major milestone by reaching 200 million monthly active users just over a year after its launch. This growth was revealed by Threads Chief Adam Mosseri in a Threads post. According to him, “I’m excited to share that we crossed the 200M milestone on @threads.”

Previously, Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Threads' impressive growth during the Q2 earnings call.

“My hope is that Threads can inspire ideas that bring people together and this amazing community continues to grow.”

Indices about Threads' growth

From its launch in July 2023, Threads saw a steady increase in users, moving from 100 million in October 2023 to 130 million by February 2024. This shows a growth of 30 million users within five months.

By April 2024, Threads’ user count increased to 150 million, adding 20 million users in just two months. This indicates sustained growth and interest in the platform.

The platform continued to grow, reaching 175 million users by July 2024. This represents an additional 25 million users in three months, demonstrating ongoing expansion. This spike represents a nearly threefold increase in the growth rate compared to previous months.

Meta’s data indicates that while Threads consistently grew, the recent surge highlights a shift in user engagement patterns, suggesting that Threads could continue its upward trajectory in the near.

Threads growth compared to rival, X (formerly Twitter)

Threads was launched in response to the decline of Twitter under Elon Musk's leadership, which led to a significant loss of long-time users. Meta seized the opportunity to offer an alternative for online discussions. Despite its growth, Threads' user base remains relatively small compared to X. In May, X CEO Elon Musk tweeted that the platform had 600 million monthly active users, with roughly half engaging daily.

However, Mosseri believes that Threads will continue to be a platform that fosters user engagement. “My hope is that Threads can inspire ideas that bring people together and this amazing community continues to grow,” he said in his post.
